形容詞の慣用表現で「~と言うより寧ろ…」の〈more A than B〉と《not so much A as B》は誤り易い。例えば 「彼は天才と言うより寧ろ狂人だ」を〈He is more a genius than a madman.〉と作文したらこれは誤り。何故だか知りたい方はご参照。

※比較の慣用表現で覚えるべき重要事項は、
何と何の比較かに注目し「比べる品詞と語順」に注意する。
①not so much + A(名詞)+ as + B(名詞)
【Aと言うより、寧ろB】
②more + A(名詞) + than + B(名詞)
【Bと言うより、寧ろA】
③more + A(形容詞の原級) + than + B(形容詞の原級)

※【彼は(天才と言うより)、寧ろ狂人だ】なら、下記の語順にすべき。
1⃣He is not so much a genious as a madman.
2⃣He is more a madman than a genius.
⇒英語は重要な事を先に述べるので上記②③が普通と見るべき。
従い、①の熟語が例外的だと暗記した方が良い。
2. 原級/比較級/最上級の慣用表現
⑴原級の慣用表現
※原級を使ったの慣用表現は下記を覚えることを推奨。
⑴as many / [much] as + 数詞～【～もの多くの数の…】
①He had written as many as five articles.
【彼は5つもの論文を寄稿した】
②The picture cost me as much as twenty thousand yen.
【その絵は 2 万円もした】
⇒可算名詞は「many」、不可算名詞に「much」を使うことに要注意
⑵ X times + as 原級 as + ~【…倍の~】
This hill is twice as high as that one.
【この丘はあの丘より2倍高い】
⇒倍数表現は下記のとおり
２倍：twice ( X two timesとはしない)
３倍以降： three times, four times , five times, etc.
半分：half
３分の一：one third ( 「数詞+序数」表現になることに注意)
３分の二：two thirds (数詞が２以上の場合、序数にｓが付く)
４分の一：one quarter
４分の三：three quarters (数詞が２以上の場合、序数にｓが付く)
⑶as 原級 as possible【出来るだけ~】
①He swam as fast as possible.
【彼は出来るだけ早く泳いだ】
②I will finish the task as quickly as possible.
【課題を出来るだけ早く終える積りだ】
⑷as 原級 as any【誰/どれにも劣らず~】
①She is as hardworking as any in the village.
【彼女は村で誰にも劣らずよく働く】
②She is as clever as any person alive.
【彼女は世にもまれな賢人だ】
⑸more + A(原級)+ than +B(原級)【Bと言うより寧ろA】
①He is more stupid than wise.
【彼は賢いと言うよりむしろ愚かだ】
② She is more pretty than beautiful.
【彼女は可愛いよりも寧ろ美しい】
⇒AとBに名詞が来るケースもある
He is more a physicist than a mathematician.
【彼は数学者よりも寧ろ物理学者だ】

⑽as far as 場所【(場所)~まで】
①I will drive my car as far as my school.
【私の学校まで車を運転します】
②I went as far as Boston.
【ボストンまで行った】
⑾as[so] far as ~【~する限りでは】
①As far as I am concerned, I have nothing to say.
【私に関する限り、お話する事はない】
②It is very far as far as I know.
【私が知る限り、とても遠い】
⑿as good as ~【(殆ど)~も同然】
①She is as good as dead.
【彼女は死んだも同然だ】
②The job is as good as done.
【仕事はもう終わったも同然だ】
⑵比較級の慣用表現
⑴the + 比較級 + of the two[+名詞]
【2つの内で～な方だ】
①He is the older of the two [brothers].
【彼は2人兄弟の内で年上の方だ】
②He chose the more expensive of the two [bicycles].
【彼は、2つの自転車のうち値段の高い方を買った】
⇒「of the two」の後の名詞は、①複数形にする、又は②省略可
⑵the+比較級(A)+~, the+比較級(B)+…
【Aすればするほど、益々B】
①The higher the sun rises, the warmer it becomes.
【日が高くなる程、益々蒸し暑くなる】
②The more you have, the more you want.
【人は持てば持つほど欲深くなる】
⑶比較級 + and + 比較級【益々~】
①He became more and more powerful.
【彼は益々力強くなった】
② It is getting colder and colder.
【だんだん寒くなってきている】
⑷肯定文, much[/still] more ~【…する。増して~する】
⇒肯定文に使う。
①He can speak Japanese, much more Chinese.
【彼は日本語が話せる。増して中国語も話せる】
➁ It is difficult to understand her books, still more her lectures.
【彼女の本は理解し難い。増して講義も難しい】
⑸否定文, much[/still] less ~【…しない。増して~しない】
⇒否定文に使う
①He can't speak Japanese, much less Chinese.
【彼は日本語を話せない。増して中国語はなおさら話せない】
➁ It isn't easy to understand her books, still less her lectures.
【彼女の本を理解するのは易しくない。増して講義は尚更易しくない】
⑹…(all) the better [more] for~【~なので一層…】
①I like you all the better for your telling a truth.
【私はあなたが正直なので一層気に入っている】
➁ I like him all the better for his faults.
【彼が欠点を持っているので、わたしはいっそう彼のことが好きだ】
⑺…none the less for ~【~であるけれど、それでも…】
①I love him none the less for his faults.
【彼は欠点があるけれども彼を愛す】
➁She is none the less beautiful for her faults.
【彼女は欠点があるがそれでも美しい】
⑻know better than+to不定詞
【～しない方がよいと分かっている/～するほど愚かでない】
①He should know better than to trust such a dubious story.
【そんな疑わしい話を信じるほど彼は愚かではない筈だ】
⑼no longer / not+V+ any longer【もう(これ以上)~しない】
①I could wait for him no longer.
＝I could not wait for him any longer.
【もう彼を待てなかった】
②She is no longer able to sing.
【彼女が歌うことはもうない】
⑽No sooner ~ than 【~すると直ぐに】
①No sooner did I get home than I realized I left my wallet in my office.
【私は家に帰ってすぐに、財布を会社に忘れたことに気付いた】
⇒「No sooner」が文頭に来たため、倒置「did I get home」になっている
⑾would sooner ~ than…【…なら~したい】
①I would sooner die than do that.
【そんなことをするくらいならいっそ死んだ方がましだ】
②She would sooner starve than eat meat.
【彼女は肉を食べるくらいなら餓死を選ぶ】
⑶最上級の慣用表現
⑴not in the least【少しも~でない】
①I am not in the least hungry.
【少しも空腹ではない】
➁He didn't look surprised in the least.
【少しも驚いた様子を見せなかった】
⑵to say the least [of it]【控えめに言っても】
①It wasn't tasty, to say the least.
【控えめに言ってもそれは美味しくなかった】
⑶make the most of ~【(好条件の~)を最大限に利用する】
①You must make the most of this good situation.
【この好機を最大限に利用すべきだ】
➁You have to make the most of every opportunity.
【チャンスを最大限に活かすべきだ】
⑷make the best of ~【(悪条件の~）を最大限に利用する】
⇒不利な立場や困難な状況を受け入れつつ「ベストを尽くす」ニュアンス
①You must make the best of this bad situation.
【このピンチを最大限に利用すべきだ】
➁We have to make the best of our small income.
【少ない収入で遣り繰りすべきだ】
